Description: In an interview in the April 2001 issue of Gear magazine (which now employs
me), former music publicist Harold Bloom talks about how songs move us,
saying: "The average human goes through a major mood swing every two hours.
In Bloomian terms that means that adults cycle through heaven and hell seven
times a day. So if I give you a song, for three-and-a-half minutes it yanks
you out of the hell that goes on inside you. That's three-and-a-half minutes
of secular salvation."
Sometimes, though, you're sort of looking for hell or some kind of sadness.
Maybe it's when you're trying to speed up the four stages of grief, or maybe
it's when you're just brooding about something that matters to you and you
alone. Here are some sad songs that actually say something, along with some
angry songs and a couple about remembering when everything was OK. That is
to say, here's an hour-long mood swing. For some reason, listening to all
these songs actually makes me happy. Maybe they'll do the same for you.
