Francis A. Gross |
|
A heavily-played, nondescript, city-run course. Short and fairly easy.
The only semi-interesting hole is #15, a dog-leg left par-4 with mature trees down the left-hand side and a large bunker that protects the bail-out area to the right. A well-placed drive leaves about a 7 or 8 iron into a small, bunkered green.
If you find yourself at Gross, chances are you couldn't find a tee time anywhere else. Like many of the other city-run courses, it's basic golf and is a favorite of the over 60 set.
comments:
I'll beg to differ with dack.com's opinion on Gross on the following basis. 1) The Minneapolis city muni's offer much better courses and challenges then those of the St. Paul muni's. 2) If you live in or near the city itself, the short 10-15 drive to one of the muni's or the U of M course make them very convenient, especially for a player playing as a single. 3) The city courses, on a whole, offer a lot less attitude and pretentiousness then other similar public courses in the area. Anyone is welcome. 4) These courses present good/fair challenge for the average golfer. Especially w/ its long par 3's, Gross is a course that is kept honest with its length.
